Welcome to
the Lime Tree Inn

Located in Great Ouseburn, a beautiful rural village nestled midway between the Yorkshire Dales and Moors, The Lime Tree Inn is a family-run country pub made of seriously good food in relaxed and friendly surroundings.

Having been built by Matthew Gath of Yorvik homes who has lived in the village for over 25 years. Wanting to create a social hub for the village and surrounding area as the village had been without a pub for 6 years. Matthews search for the ideal people to operate the pub brought him husband and wife team, Rob and Heloisa Mitchell.

Rob and Heloisa strive to create a modern day local that will build on a sense of tradition and community – a home from home for each and every one of their guests. Inspired by the rolling rural landscape around them, with a menu that is locally sourced, the ales hand picked and the welcomes plentiful and natural.

We hope that you enjoy your time with us.

Here you will find useful information about the pub and the local area.

If there is anything that you need do not hesitate to ask.

The Story of
Great Ouseburn

The mature Lime trees that line the lane in front of the pub were planted over a two year period back in 1871 and 1872.

In the middle of last century late September would see an annual event unique to Great Ouseburn.

The final performance of the season in the cricket field by Barret’s circus before settling down for the winter at Low farm, Little Ouseburn.

It is said during still dark winter nights lions could be heard roaring, elephants trumpeting amongst other animal noises filling the quiet night sky.

One of the most exciting things for the children in the village was to see Silma the old female elephant walking up through the village collecting the odd carrot and cabbages from the villagers as she went.

The River Ouse from which our village Great Ouseburn takes its name is formed from the River Ure at Cuddy Shaw Reach near Linton-on-Ouse, about six miles downstream of the confluence of the River Swale with the River Ure. It then flows through the city of York and the towns of Selby and Goole before joining with the River Trent at Trent Falls, near the village of Faxfleet, to form the Humber Estuary.

The length of the Ouse is about 84 km and the combined Ure/Ouse river is about 208 km making it the sixth longest river in the UK. The word ‘ouse’ is a very common name for rivers in England; it derives from the Celtic word ‘Usa’, from *udso-, which simply means ‘water’. ‘River Ouse’ therefore means ‘River Water’.

The source of the river Ouse rises in the grounds of a former village workhouse on the outskirts of Great Ouseburn.

At one point in history there were three pubs to choose from in the village, The Three Horseshoes, The Bay Tree and The Crown.

There was also a fishmonger a butcher and multiple shops and everyone used these resources on a daily basis.

Times may have changed where big supermarkets and buying online is the norm, but the community spirit within Great Ouseburn still remains the same.
